The Popple has a gas problem. She makes little farts and then screams her head off. It’s kind of cute (because baby farts are adorable) but also upsetting, because the gas clearly makes her uncomfortable.
One of the things I do to make her feel better when she’s gassy is dance her around the house and sing. Here’s what’s currently on the gassy Popple playlist:
1. Rocket Man – Elton John
My husband refers to the Popple’s poos as rocket fuel due to the explosive sound we hear when she makes them, so this song reminds me of her.
2. Circle of Life – The Lion King soundtrack (Elton John/Tim Rice)
I can’t wait until the Popple is old enough to watch the Lion King. Unlike most modern animated films, which are all computer graphics and no soul, the Lion King is full of great music, fart jokes and genuinely touching moments. Suck it, Frozen.*
* I actually like Frozen – I even own it on Blu-ray – but Elsa has nothing on Simba.
3. Tiny Dancer – Elton John
You may have gotten the impression that I’m a big Elton John fan. I’m not. Until I had the Popple, I hadn’t listened to an Elton John song in years. Now when she starts crying, I often can think of nothing but Elton John songs. I’m not sure if that’s a compliment or an insult to Sir Elton’s songwriting skills.
3. Old MacDonald (en Español)
I learned this song in AP Spanish in high school and it’s stuck with me for the past 15+ years. In a way it’s good that I’m singing to the Popple in Spanish, because I want her to be bilingual like my Puerto Rican husband. I’m not sure I’m doing her any favours with my terrible Spanish accent, though – plus the lyrics are kind of weird. They translate roughly as:
On my father’s property
We have a little duck
Quack quack yes, quack quack no
Jump yes, Jump no
Over here, over there
It jumps, it jumps
On my father’s property
4. Colours of the Wind – Pocahontas soundtrack
I recently re-watched Pocahontas and discovered that it’s a pretty bad movie. Not only is it fairly humourless compared to other animated Disney movies, but it’s also REALLY historically inaccurate, which bothers me more than the fact that Pocahontas’ best friends are a raccoon and a hummingbird. Still, I can’t stop singing this big stupid ballad.
5. Heroes – Måns Zelmerlöw
This is the song that won the Eurovision Song Contest this year, and it was the best of the bunch, with a genuinely catchy tune and a fantastic stage show where the singer interacted with crudely-drawn animated schoolboys. As you do.
6. The Farmer in the Dell
The Popple’s bouncer plays a snippet of this song, so it gets stuck in my head. The ending of Farmer in the Dell always makes me a little bit sad because the cheese is left standing alone. I genuinely feel sorry for the lonely cheese, which pretty much tells you everything about me that you need to know.
